Torrey Pines HS VB Retreat

Kern River | Sequoia National Park

This past weekend I had the absolute pleasure of accompanying a local high school on their annual volleyball retreat to engage in team bonding, adventure and memory making prior to the upcoming High School volleyball season.

Wednesday early morning, the crew loaded in a a caravan of 3 white Ford 350’s, with the head coach leading the way in an RV with his family, making our way up the beautiful Californian terrain. City slowly faded away as we drew deeper into the desert. Eventually, the distantly hazy mountains became the monsters in front of us, which prompted us to maneuver around them. Upon reaching the small city of Kernville, we settled into our campsite for the day. Girls once completely packed into the vans were pouring out to refresh in the river flowing near our set-up.

The first full day was full of exploring the Sequoias and river activities. The second followed the first with more adventures in the forest by hiking the Unal Trail, a slight van mechanical brake issue on our way down the mountain, and an incredible time floating at a spot off the main road- the Chico Flats.

While Kernville is a small town, in a somewhat seeming middle of nowhere, it was an amazing break from reality. The desert stores special adventures away in its heart for those willing to explore…and brave some of the heat.
